Lap Pool Rules/Guidelines

As we begin a new season, we want to remind everyone of the rules and etiquette for lap swimming. Most importantly, we want everyone can enjoy their time in the water. These rules are particularly important during busy times. The use of the Lap Pool has been expanded to include water runners and noodle users, among other water fitness activities. The Overlee Board acknowledges this and supports the use of the Lap Pool for these water fitness activities. We encourage lap pool users to be welcoming to the other ways our members are choosing to stay fit. Also, please be considerate of the fact that members who use the lap pool represent a wide range of ages and abilities. So come on in – the waters great!

Rules/Guidelines:

  • Pick your lane according to your speed. Faster swimmers in middle lanes; slower in outside lanes. Change lanes if necessary.
  • Water runners and noodle-users should use the outside lanes (whenever possible) and go in single-file to allow for others to use the lane, particularly during busy times.
  • If you are swimming, water running or whatever and the pool is crowded, please be open to circle swimming so that others can also use the pool. Please come during slower times if you don’t like circle swimming.
  • Always inform other swimmer/swimmers in the lane when you enter.
  • When circle swimming, slower swimmers should stop at end of the lane to allow faster swimmers to pass.
  • Kickboards, paddles, water running belts and noodles are permitted in the lap pool.
  • Please use the kick boards in the storage boxes – please do not use the orange kick boards as those are for the swim team’s use only.
  • The lap pool should not be used for general swim instruction except for adult swim clinics.
  • Use of the lap pool is adults-only (ages 13 and older) from 6:00–9:00am and after 6:00pm each day.
  • Most importantly, keep it fun!

Memorial Day Weekend Plans and Festivities; Pools Open on Friday at 1:00 pm

Ready for some pool time and volleyball? Ready for dinner on the deck and seeing OVL friends? Well, we are ready to start Summer Season 2018!
Memorial Day Weekend hours are:
Friday, May 25th: All pools (and the volleyball court) open at 1:00 pm and stay open until 9:00 pm;An adults-only Adults only Happy Hour in the clubhouse and on the upper deck from 8:00 –  9:00 pm
Saturday and Sunday, May 26th – 27th: All pools open 10:00 am – 9:00 pm
Monday,  May 28th: All pools 10:00 – 8:00; Lap Pool: Early Bird from 6:00 – 9:00 am and until 9:00 pm
Note: Lap Swimming from 6:00 – 9:00 am and 8:00 – 9:00 pm is adults only.
Plus, we have lots of fun planned as well, including:

Fall Extended Season Information and Hours

Fall Extended Season runs from Monday, September 11th to Sunday, October 8th.

You must have a Blue Extended Season Membership to participate in lap swimming during this time.  Please be sure to swipe your card as you enter from the back gate. If you are interested in participating, you can sign up anytime for $135 per person (no pro-rated fees). Most members sign up as an add-on to their Active Member Plan in February, but you can join anytime. You must have an Active Membership to participate ). No guests allowed. Contact [email protected] if you are interested in adding Extended Season to your membership.

The hours are:
Monday through Friday: 6:00 – 9:00 am

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings: 6:00 – 9:00 pm

Saturday and Sunday: 12:00 – 4:00 pm.

Adult Swim Clinics in August

To further support adult swimmers at Overlee, we will be offering one-hour swim clinics. All swimmers in clinics will be given instruction on skills related to the topic with ample opportunity for practice and feedback. Dr. Joan Mountain Elliott, former coach of Overlee swim team from 2003 to 2013, will be teaching these one-hour clinics for Overlee members.
Each clinic is limited to 8 swimmers.
Clinics are FREE to Overlee members. Sign-up sheets will be in the breezeway near the manager’s office starting on Tuesday, August 2nd.  The clinics are held in the lap pool. We are alternating daytime and evening clinics.

  • Wednesday, August 2nd, 7:00PM (Clinic full; wait list started) – Breathing in Swimming: This clinic will teach you proper breathing techniques as you swim and how to position your body for easier breathing in freestyle in order to improve your stamina and speed as you swim.
  • Wednesday, August 9th, 11:00AM – 10 Excellent Exercises for the Pool: Pool exercises can improve agility, balance, and cardiovascular fitness. From water jogging to deep water bicycle, come learn about exercises recommended by the American Physical Therapy Association.
  • Monday, August 14th, 7:00PM – Freestyle: Do you wonder about your body position in the water as you swim? This clinic will focus on technique in freestyle, and how to be a more streamlined and efficient swimmer.
  • Wednesday, August 23rd, 11:00AM – Backstroke Did you know that in backstroke, like freestyle, you should be rotating your shoulders and core from side to side with your head not moving? Are you unsure of how to move your arms in the water? This clinic will focus on technique in backstroke technique.
  • Wednesday, August 30th, 7:00PM – Breaststroke: Streamline, streamline, streamline. Come to this clinic to learn how to get the most out of each stroke in breaststroke.

FRIDAY NIGHT ADULT SWIM LESSONS
Each Friday evening, Adult Swim Lessons are offered from 8:00PM – 8:45PM in the lap pool. Whether you’re an experienced or beginner swimmer, you will receive personal tips to improve your swimming from the experienced swim instructor Kathy Koczyk. And it’s free to OVL members.

To further support adult swimmers at Overlee, we will be offering two swim clinic opportunities. We hope you will come try them out and find ways to improve your swimming. And both clinics are FREE to Overlee members!

New Adult Swim Clinics to Be Offered Beginning This Week
New group clinics limited to eight swimmers will begin this week. Our first clinics will be on balance in the water and better breathing, with other topics possibly added later. All swimmers in clinics will be given instruction on skills related to the topic with ample opportunity for practice and feedback.

Dr. Joan Mountain Elliott, former coach of Overlee swim team from 2003 to 2013, will be teaching these one-hour clinics for Overlee members. She will be combining her 23 years of experience in physical therapy as a movement specialist and her coaching experience to give members an opportunity to learn new skills in the water.

Each clinic is limited to 8 swimmers. 
Clinics are FREE to Overlee members.
Sign up sheets are posted at the front and back gates and in the breezeway near the manager’s office.
The clinics will be held in the lap pool.
We will alternate daytime and evening clinics to accommodate those who work.

The following swim clinics will be held the first two weeks:
Wednesday, July 2611:00 am: Balance in the water: Learning to find your balance for more effective and less strenuous swimming
How often do you feel as though you are pulling an anchor with you as you move through the water? This clinic will give you guidance with balancing your body in the water, an important first step to efficient swimming.
Wednesday, August 2nd, 7:00 pm.: Breathing in Swimming: Learning how to breathe in freestyle to allow for the ability to swim with ease. 
How often do you find yourself holding your breath as you swim? Do you sometimes stop after several lengths feeling out of breath but physically knowing you can do more? This clinic will teach you proper breathing techniques as you swim and how to position your body for easier breathing in freestyle in order to improve your stamina and speed as you swim.

Friday Night Swim Clinics
Each Friday evening, an Adult Swim Clinic is held  from 8:00 – 8:45 pm in the lap pool. All levels are welcome. You will receive personal tips to improve your swimming from the very experienced swim instructor Kathy Koczyk. Whether you’re an experienced or beginner swimmer, Kathy has tips and suggestions for everyone no matter what your level. And it’s free to OVL members.
 

IMPORTANT REMINDER: All Pools Close at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, July 12th

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Overlee is hosting the Division 1 Relay Carnival THIS Wednesday, July 12th. ALL POOLS close that day at 2:00 pm. Afternoon swim lessons are cancelled too. And, if you want to swim after 2:00 on Wednesday, Overlee members can swim at Chesterbrook, Tuckahoe and McLean Community Association pools. Many thanks to these pools for allowing our members to swim! Just show your Overlee card as you enter.

Join Us for the OVL Fourth of July Celebration!

Join us for our annual 4th of July celebration!  On Tuesday the 4th, the main, social and baby pool swill open at 10:00 am, the lap pool opens at 6:00 am for adult lap swimming.  Please note: All Overlee pools and facilities will close at 6:00PM on July 4th so the staff can enjoy the holiday.
Schedule of Events:

  • 12Noon – 4th of July Kids Parade – let your kids decorate their bikes, scooters, buggy, etc. and come show off their patriotic colors and spirit!

Following the parade will be games in the main pool, including the Big Splash contest and swim relays as well as other games on the deck and in the social pool.  The moon bounce will be set up all day.

  • 12:30PM – Dive Showcase with Overlee’s Dive Team
  • 12:30PM – 2:30PM – Cheese/ hamburgers, hotdogs and rib platters will be for sale to raise funds for the Dive, Swim, and Synchro Teams (all grills on the upper deck will be unavailable from 11:00AM to 3:00PM)
  • 12:45PM – 1:15PM – Synchro See-It/Try-It Demo with the Head Coach and swimmers from the NoVa Synchro Team
  • 1:00PM – 5:00PM – Adult Volleyball Tournament
