The Overlee Winter Swim Program began in 1964. The program provides “once-a-week” competitive stroke development for swimmers for the Overlee community.
The program offers a positive teaching environment that encourages learning and provides opportunities for the best technique instruction possible. The year-long skill development and improvement focus allows the summer leaguers to perform at peak potential and prepares youngsters for the swim team environment. In fact, 90% of winter swim participants also compete in the summer league.
The Winter Swim Program develops skills and coaches speed improvement through clinic swim workouts. The sessions range from developmental swim school (ages 5 to 8), as well as age group (9 through 18) workouts focusing on competitive stroke technique. The competitive technique session is designed for experienced competitive swimmers wishing to augment their Winter USS league practices. On average, 200 children—the majority in the 8- to-13 age range—attend the Winter Program each year.
Program Dates and Times and Session Specifics
We will be offering three separate swim sessions: 6-6:45 pm, 7-7:45 pm, and 7:45-8:45 pm.
The first two sessions will include basic stroke instruction designed to teach swimmers all four swim stokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
Swimmers must be comfortable in the water, able to submerge and blow bubbles, and swim the width of the tank pool.
Swimmers must be at least 5 years old by June 1st 2016 to participate in these sessions. Swimmers who turn 5 years old during the Winter Swim season may request permission to join the group after their 5th birthday.
NEW WINTER SWIM and NEW 2017 SWIM TEAM swimmers should register for the 6pm session.
Returning SWIM TEAM swimmers should register for the 7pm session. There is room for 80 swimmers in each session.
The third session from 7:45 pm to 8:45 pm will now be for all 10 and over SWIM TEAM swimmers. This session is no longer by invitation only. It is designed to provide advanced technique training and conditioning for competitive swimmers. Coach Brenna, Ellie, Lena and MacKenzie will be leading this stroke technique session. There is limited space in this hour and there is only room for 50 swimmers. Please keep in mind this session does not substitute for a United States Swimming winter swim team. Rather, this technique session augments USS training with intensive technique training.
